Spring Schedule: Our Pick Of Must-see Exhibitions In Sydney Over The Spring Season
Many of us plan to make the most of the warmer months, preferring to take splendour in the sunshine over a well air-conditioned gallery hall. But, the Springtime is hardly an off-season for the Sydney art scene so we thought we’d share some of the shows we are keenly awaiting as our season turns to Spring.
Museum of Contemporary Art:
23 August – 19 November
Exploring the theme of ‘Ancient Future’, the 26th edition of the young artist focused show will see eight artists consider the relationship between existence in the present and past, whilst looking to archives and collections. Since 1992, Primavera has showcased artists under 35 in the early stages of their careers.
1 November – 18 February
Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist is internationally recognised as a pioneering figure in the multimedia medium. Visitors are engulfed in the dazzling environments she creates from projections of kaleidoscopic colours and lights. This exclusive Sydney exhibition, Sip My Ocean, will deliver the spectrum of Rist’s works from her formative years to current day. A great immersive experience for young and old alike to escape and enjoy.

Whilst the famous display of portraiture launches in the winter, it’s schedule reaches into the Spring. Australia’s most coveted art prize is something that every Sydney-sider should consume at least once, if not multiple times, in their lives. With some of our country’s biggest known artists putting forward their best, it is a truly insightful introduction into the eclectic and vivacious world of Australian art. But, as with every competition there is always much more to the fun than first place. The landscape-centric Wynne Prize always provides a calming and reflective break from the intensity of faces in the Archy.
26 August – 2018
The idea of making something from nothing is pushed to a new perspective in this exhibition of contemporary Australian and Kiwi artist. Everyday materials and imagery are utilised to create a diverse and surprising collection of works, all of which have been drawn from the Gallery’s ARTAND Emerging Artist Collection. Take note that the catalogue of works spans some years, demonstrating the experimental and eager spirit of the creators as they explore the beauty of the mundane.

Opens August 30
Chippendale’s Chinese contemporary art space closed its doors in early August to begin preparing for its latest foray. Taking into consideration China’s Taoist, Buddhist and Confucianist history of teachings and then juxtaposing against China’s current atheist regime, the exhibition aims to explore how God is represented by modern Chinese artists.

MONTAGES: THE FULL CUT, 1999 –2015
11 November – 3 December
Tracy Moffatt and Gary Hillberg’s ode to the cinematic form began in 1999, the following 16 years has seen an encyclopaedic knowledge of films from across the medium employed to invent new fictions and compositions. Visitors will be able to view their entire catalogue of collaborations, a field day for any film buffs out there.
