  • What is an Art hanging system?
It’s a system of components that combine to give limitless flexibility to hang any size or type of artwork on the wall. The components are
Rail- this attaches as discreetly as possible to the cornice area of the room Hangers – these attach into the rail and suspend the artworks

Hooks- These slide and lock on the hangers….. Cleverly and attach to the artwork frame’s D ring fitting

Together these components enable you to easily change the size and position of artworks anywhere along the length of rail. The only tool you’ll need is a spirit level….. to stop arguments about what is level.

  • How do I measure the room/s?

We don’t want you to sweat on the measurements….. relax… The rail comes in 3m, 2.5m & 2m standard lengths…. so we only need rough measurements to the nearest metre for quoting.
Using a Tape measure is always best but if you don’t have one or find centimetres met res and

Using a Tape measure is always best but if you don’t have one or find centimetres metres and millimetres confusing then just go old school…. Pacing out big steps works just as well.

  • Do I measure the rail to go the whole length of the wall?
Aesthetically the rail always looks best if it is installed at the top of the wall like a cornice element from corner to corner or edge to edge.

Technically and for those budget conscious the rail can be installed on just the “sweet spot” where the artwork can hang.

  • Do I measure the rail length over Windows and doors?
For the best “look” yes. A consistent cornice element on all walls will settle into the interior architecture better and be less noticeable.

Technically, there is no reason to install the rail over windows and doors as you are less likely to hang any artwork in these positions.

Ask yourself…. Are you more concerned about how it looks or how it works/ how much it costs?

Bear in mind the rail component is the less expensive element of the systems.

  • Can the rail be cut to size ? What with?

Yes rail can be cut with a hacksaw or Drop saw with a metal blade. (Tip) make sure you cut your rail at the ends the will go in the corner of the wall or will have an end cap put over them…. Then your cuts can be a little less than perfect…..

  • What colours does the rail come in?
    Colours vary with rail types.

Essentially there is always a Vivid White Primer colour. These match ceiling white or cornice white paint colours but these rail have a paint receptive surface and can be painted with an acrylic or enamel paint.

  • How do I choose the right rail system for my rooms?
If you are building new ceilings…check out the Built-in rail systems and match you ceiling/cornice type of construction
If your ceiling is already constructed… check out the top of the wall….
Is there a plaster shape strip?… this is Cornice
Is there a small gap between the ceiling and the wall- this is a shadowline recess
Is the wall and Ceiling meeting at a right angle? – this is square set
Are there ceiling tiles? – this is suspended ceiling system
  • What is the weight capacity of an art hanging system?

Because the system is made up of three components, the weight capacity is determined by the particular combination of these components.

    • Light weight combination is <10kg
    • Medium weight combination is <20kg
    • Heavy weight combination is <40kg
    • Rails – 20-50kg capacity calculated per metre length of rail installed with fixings as recommended. Weight guide (link rail cornice table-)
    Hangers – Hanger safe loads
    • 10kg for 1mm Diameter
    • 20kg for Nylon Perlon 2mm diametre
    • 30kg for St/ Steel 2mm diamtere cable

If you hang multiple artworks on each hanger don’t exceed these total limits

    Hooks-
    • Micro grip 1mm – 5kg on 1mm Nylon/ 10kg on 2mm
    • Ratchet Hook – 15kg capacity ( 10kg on nylon )
    • Micro Grip 2mm -20kg capacity on 2mm nylon perlon and cable
(TIP) To be safe and get the best hang we recommend hanging any artwork by two hangers.
That way you share the load over two points so you effectively double the weight capacity of
    each hanger and hook.

e.g Micro twister nylon with Micro grip has 5kg capacity Using two hanger and two hooks gives you 10kg capacity.

Total weight capacity is best worked out by using the Rail ( per mtre) and Hook capacity as the primary guide to what can be hung.

Only when you hang multiple artworks above each other on the same hangers does the hanger weight capacity become important.

(TIP) weigh the artwork and divide by 2 to work out the weight of hanger and hook)

  • How big is the rail?

Pretty small and perfectly sized to nestle into many types of cornice design. Our built-in series is designed to disappear from view.

Our wall & ceiling attached rails are designed cleverly to be as small as possibly can be installed with ease.

For the specifics measurements each Product Page has a diagram giving exact measurements. Or click on the Install, Project Sheets & video links

  • How do the hangers work?

The Twister head on the end of hangers is a patented design by Artiteq. It is the only hanger in the world that can be installed into rail recessed above the ceiling line.

To start…… pinch the hanger Nylon or cable between your Index finger and thumb about and Twist or twirl the hanger between your fingers to the right to lock the head into the rail channel.

The hanger can be slid in the rail and simply twisted out

  • Nylon Perlon or Stainless Steel cable Hangers what the difference?
Hangers come in 2mm and 1mm thicknesses.

Basically 2mm is standard. The Nylon disappears

1mm is the least visible but takes the least weight between 5-10kg

  • How do I choose the right hangers and hooks?

Weight capacity, aesthetics and the height of your ceiling determines the hanger you should buy.

    Weight capacity
    • Compatibility of Hanger to the Hook is essential.
    • We have 1mm diameter hangers and 2mm diameter hangers
    • 1mm Nylon Suits Artwork <10kg
    • 2mm Nylon suits Artwork <20kg
    • 1mm St/Steel suits Artwork <20kg
    • 2mm St/Steel suits Artwork <30kg

All our hooks work on both Nylon and Cable hangers

    Aesthetics

Make the hangers disappear as much as possible as long as you have adequate weight capacity. So choose the thinnest hanger that closest greater weight capacity.

Nylon disappears more against the wall than Stainless steel cable. Stainless steel is very hard wearing, has high weight capacity.

1mm hangers have less visual impact than 2mm hangers

1mm hangers cast a smaller shadow on the wall when lit.

(Tips) Most customer say there barely notice the hangers after a couple of days….. the
    artwork.

If you move the artwork around a lot or are in a commercial environment, cable hangers are
    your best options.

    Hanger Length

Deduct 1.5m from the height of your ceiling to establish the length hanger you should buy.

(Tip) never cut the excess cable/ perlon hanging below an artwork. You may need the length one day when you re hang other artwork and cutting the hanger can make reinserting it into the hooks difficult.

Always coil the cable and tuck it behind the artwork you have just hung.
Use non marking painters tap to stick it into a tucked away spot.
  • 2mm or 1mm diameter Cable or Nylon hangers… how to choose?
Weight capacity needed for the artwork
Aesthetics – the least visible look.

Length determined by Height of your ceiling

determines the hanger you should buy.

Micro twister Cable hangers are recommended as they give Weight capacity up to 20kg when used in a pair.

  • How do I weigh my Artwork?
    • Rough Reckoner
    • Pick up with one hand < 5kg
    • Pick up artwork with two hands <15kg
    • Only able to pick up one side of artwork <30kg

    More Precise method.

Stand on floor scales .. note your weight…..then pick up the artwork note the weight again the difference is the weight of the artwork.

  • What do I do with the Hanger hanging below the artwork?
    hanger!!!

Coil up the excess hanger into one hand near the middle of the artwork’s height Loop the hanger end through the coil a couple of times, initially going around the hanger coming down from the rail. This locks the coil of hanger and prevents it unravelling. Then tuck the coil at the back of the artwork out of sight.

If it falls into view, try turning around the coil or use painters non marking tape ( low tack) to stick the coil at the back of the picture.

  • How do the hooks work?
    We only sell self-locking hooks.

They have a patented mechanism which grips the cord or cable only in the downward direction.

This type of self- locking hook has the hanger fed into the hole on the plunger top of the hook, push the hanger through the hook body and out through the bottom of the hook. The hook will slide up the hanger with operating it in any way.

Simply pull down on the hanger and push the hook up with the other hand.

  • What’s a D Ring?

this fitting is screwed to the LHS & RHS on the back sides of the artwork’s frame. It is the latch point for the Hooks to attach to the hangers of the system.

  • Can I hang the hook on the string/ wire at the back of the artwork?

Hanging by one hanger may seem the cost efficient way to hang a picture but its not the safest method or produces the best quality hanging effect on the artwork. The artwork can easily tip out of level if bumped or knocked by a breeze.

We always recommend two hangers and hooks are used because the artwork stays level & hangs flatter against the wall.

If you do try one hanger hangs…..
Be sure there is only minimal slack in the wire/ string or the top of the picture may tilt forward.
The taller the artwork( over 1m high) the better the quality hanging by one hanger works…….. there’s some physics to do with the centre of gravity of a suspended object at the core here.
